Möbius is a new kind of sex toy company. We design sex toys the same way Apple designs iPhones - serious engineering, novel solutions, and beautiful design.

Our first product is unlike any other sex toy. Rather than simply vibrate, our product also thrusts in and out. While other thrusting sex machines do exist, they are clunky, expensive, and lack mainstream appeal. Our toy is inexpensive, compact, and attractive. We've designed it from scratch - including winding the motor coils by hand - to ensure its the best it can be.

Sex toys may be uncommon in the startup world, but not in the real world - a quarter of women use vibrators regularly. And remember: 'Sex' has more users than facebook.

Prototype

A few pictures of the current working prototype and the mock up showing the expected final size.

Our first product will be unlike any other sex toy, and we currently have a working prototype featuring basic motion capability.

The device is fully programmable, and we can build in a variety of motion profiles, with variations on stroke length, speed, force, and vibration. The video shows fast point to point motion, but slower and smoother sine-wave profiles will be possible with more firmware development.

While other sex machines are based on large mechanisms or expensive off-the-shelf industrial parts, our product is based on a linear servomotor that we built from scratch. The linear motor is the most compact solution for this kind of motion, and it is relatively simple to manufacture. Because it only has one moving part, it is very reliable. Industrial linear motors cost thousands of dollars, but we can produce our actuator for a fraction of that cost.

We want to turn this into a classy, high end product, with industrial design on the level of Apple products. We'll leverage social media to promote the product, and use video content produced in house to draw traffic to the site.

Taylor Alexander

I'm a Mechanical Engineer and am well-versed in all facets of robotics, including machine design and machining, programming, and electronics design.

I've been building robotic things my whole life - in eighth grade I built a gas powered hovercraft that could carry a child, in high school I built several six legged walking robots, and in college at Santa Clara University I led a team that built an Internet-controlled four-legged walking robot for the Senior Design Conference.

For the last six years I have been in charge of design and manufacturing at a small company in San Jose that sells industrial measurement equipment. I have improved the overall aesthetics of our products while simultaneously reducing manufacturing costs.

I am an active member of the San Francisco kink community, and for the last few years I have been working to make sex toys better and more affordable through engineering.

Market

The target customer for this device will be those in the kink community and the growing number of mainstream consumers who purchase $150+ vibrators.

Our next best competitor sells their product for $2000, and we expect to retail version 1 for around $300-500. We should get a lot of interest in the kink community at that price, and we will use the initial users to learn more about how people are using the product, and what features are important to them. We'll use what we learn in Phase 1 to design a smaller cheaper product that appeals to the mainstream, and aim for a retail price of less than $200, where it will compete with high end vibrators.

There are many sex toy companies now that sell between $5 million and $50 million in product annually, and the total market for sex toys is over $1B in the US alone.

Why Sex Toys?

As a team, we are passionate about technology and sex toys. Too many sex toys are low quality junk, and we hate that! Sex toy companies aren't common in the angel community, but we believe they should be. A recent survey of vibrator use, for example, showed that at least 50% of all americans (men and women) have used a vibrator, and nearly 25% of the women reported using a vibrator in the past month. Sex toys are common, and sex toy use is healthy! For as popular as sex toys are, however, there is very little innovation in the field, and quality is poor. Customers want better products, and we want to provide them with that.
